Overview:

The CFA Level I examination is administered four time in a year in February, May, August and November. It focuses on analysis using the tools of the 10 topic areas of the Candidate Body of Knowledge. These areas are ethical and professional standards, quantitative methods, economics, financial reporting and analysis, corporate finance, equity investments, fixed income, derivatives, alternative investments, and portfolio management and wealth planning. The Level I exam consists of 180 multiple choice questions, split between two 135-minute sessions (session times are approximate).

What is the format of the CFA Level I exam?

The CFA Level I exam consists of 180 multiple-choice questions, divided into two sessions of 135 minutes each. Each session contains 90 questions, and candidates are advised to spend approximately 90 seconds per question.

How are the questions structured in the CFA Level I exam?

Each multiple-choice item on the CFA Level I exam consists of a stem (a question, a statement, and/or table) as well as three answer choices (A, B, or C).

Two basic formats are used:

  1. Sentence completion with three unique choices
  2. Questions with three unique choices.

Overview:

The CFA Level II exam consists of 22 item sets comprised of vignettes with 88 accompanying multiple-choice questions. The Level II exam will be 4 hours and 24 minutes, split into two equal sessions of 2 hours and 12 minutes, with an optional break in-between. Vignettes can be lengthy, so give yourself plenty of time to read. Plan on about 10 to 20 minutes to read and answer each vignette; the time will vary based on the number of questions that follow the vignette. These mini case studies have you work through real-world problems and answer questions related to each of them. Take a quick look at the questions before you read each vignette. This will give you an idea of the subject matter to be covered.
